Government lifts ban on state land transactions
The government has lifted the temporary ban on state land transactions, ending a suspension that had been in place since January 10, 2025.
The ban was introduced to allow a thorough review of the country’s land administration system.
Speaking at the inauguration of the newly reconstituted National Lands Commission on Tuesday, September 2, President John Dramani Mahama announced the decision and highlighted the reforms that have been set in motion.
“Today, with the inauguration of the new commission and the adoption of robust accountability measures, I am pleased to announce that the ban on land transactions has been lifted,” he stated.
According to the President, the review process exposed several weaknesses in how public lands were being managed.
He stressed that lifting the ban should not be seen as a return to old practices, but as the beginning of a new, disciplined approach to land governance.
All future allocations, leases, or sales of public lands will now be subject to stricter oversight, digital verification tools, and transparent procedures.
