A group of Gonja youth has besieged the palace of Yagbonwura Bii-Kunutu Jewu Soale, the Overlord of Gonja, to demand his intervention in the ongoing conflict at Daboya in the Savanna Region.

According to the group, the Yagbonwura must, as a matter of urgency, summon all warriors of Gonjaland to a meeting to find an amicable solution to the protracted dispute.

They also accused the government of its involvement in the conflict.

They alleged that the security personnel deployed to the area have arrested and mistreated some chiefs and youth, turning the town into a ghost town.

A years-long feud between the Mamprusis and the Gonjas over land and chieftaincy was renewed on Thursday, June 1, at Lukula after reports that the Mamprusi side had sent warriors to prevent the arrival of a rival chief from Daboya.

The violence that broke out resulted in the death of an 81-year-old man and the destruction of several houses in the communities in the Wasipe Traditional Area.

In response, Gonja chiefs from other traditional areas have reportedly started mobilizing their warriors and are moving toward Daboya to show solidarity and potentially assist in resolving the dispute.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested three persons suspected of being involved in the violent attacks at Mempeasem and Lukula communities.

According to the police, calm has been restored to the area while efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspects.
