‘God loves order’ – Clergy urges churches to adhere to new directives

Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr Paul Kwabena Boafo has welcomed government’s easing of restrictions on public gathering as the country continues to fight the deadly coronavirus.

In the new directives announced by the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, religious services are not to go beyond an hour, a maximum of 100 attendees, are among other measures proposed.

But the clergyman in an interview on JoyNews, monitored by theghanareport.com, indicated the move is acceptable. “I think the 100 attendance is manageable for the start,” he said.

Since the announcement, Ghanaians on social media have expressed concern about holding church services within these restrictions.

Churches, notably Pentecostals, are known for long church services.

But Rev. Dr. Boafo stressed ‘God loves order’ and urged believers not to abuse the gift of the Holy Spirit by making ‘unbiblical’ pronouncements to undermine the directives.

“We must understand that Christ himself is a God of order. God loves order and cleanliness. He advises us to always be clean when we come to his presence.

“God doesn’t love disorder and he wants his people to be alive so we will adhere to the new directive. At the end of the day, if people come to church and fall sick and end up not coming again, that will be a very bad thing. If life is at the centre of everything then we must preserve life,” Dr Boafo indicated.

He also said the government’s closure of the churches as part of the coronavirus containment measures was a time for the clergy to put their houses in order.

“It is God’s way of bringing sanity,” he noted.

He further dispelled rumors that the church community had pressurized the government into reopening churches across the country.
