GOC president Ben Nunoo Mensah attributes Black Stars struggles to lack of player commitment
President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Ben Nunoo Mensah has attributed Black Stars’ recent poor performances to a lack of commitment by the playing body.
The senior national team has come under severe criticism following their disappointing outing in the recently concluded 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
After six matches played, the Black Stars recorded three draws and three defeats and finished at the bottom of Group F with three points.
This means Ghana will participate in the AFCON tournament for the first time in 20 years.
Reacting to the abysmal performance of the team, Nunoo-Mensah blamed a lack of commitment from the players, saying that players who have switched nationality to play for the Black Stars do not understand playing for the country.
According to him, it is time to go back to basics, which will help fix the challenges of the Black Stars.
“I don’t see the national attachment of these players, and it is because they have been brought from different places. They don’t understand the jersey they are wearing,” he told Asempa FM.
“These players we currently have lack commitment, and I believe that we have to go back to the basics to fix these problems,” he added.
The Black Stars will aim to put up an improved performance when they face Chad and Madagascar in March 2025 in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Meanwhile, the future of Otto Addo, who is the head coach of the team, is yet to be decided by the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association.
