President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his main political rival, Mr John Dramani Mahama, have taken to social media urging Ghanaians to vote in local government elections.

The President was joined by the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who also made the same call, in an election which is generally greeted with apathy.

This was shortly after voting in their respective districts separately. Former President John Dramani Mahama also called on the electorate to exercise their “civic responsibility”.

Members of the public are to elect new assembly heads and unit committee members for the next four-year term after the expiration of the tenure of the current leaders this year.

Mr Akufo-Addo, who went to vote in Kyebi in the Eastern Region accompanied by First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo posted:

Dr Bawumia who cast his vote few hours after polls opened in the Northern Region wrote: “In fulfilment of my civic responsibilities, I was at the Kperiga Presby D/A School ‘A’ polling station in Walewale to cast my vote in this year’s District and Unit Committee members’ election. I urge all to come out in your numbers to vote since national development begins at the local level”.

Mr Mahama, who hails from the same region as Dr Bawumia indicated :

Meanwhile, opinion leaders and some youth groups at Ekumfi in the Central Region, have furiously resisted the organization of the polls in the area insisting that: “there shall be no elections for assembly members”.

The irate group believe they have been excluded from national development. For them, their importance is only seen when election is due.
