GNFS promises full report on Weija recycling plant fire

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) says it will release a full report on the fire that destroyed a plastic recycling plant at Weija once ongoing investigations are completed.

According to the Greater Accra Regional Commander, ACFO II Nisawu Kwame Rashid, initial clues about the cause have been identified, but the situation is complex and requires a detailed investigation before any conclusions are made public.

“We have gotten some clues on what has gone on, but looking at the nature of the issue, we are doing further investigations. I hope that not too long from now, we will put it out there and add it to our report for stakeholders. This incident happened just 24 hours ago, so we must investigate properly before publishing the results,” he said.

ACFO II Rashid also provided an update on a firefighter who sustained injuries while battling the blaze. He confirmed the officer suffered burns around the right ear but received prompt medical attention.

“He was taken to the hospital, treated, and has been discharged,” he added.

The fire, which broke out around 1:00 a.m., completely razed the Charkeih Recycling Company in the Weija Gbawe Municipality, destroying its main installations and several tonnes of recycled plastic.

Preliminary reports suggest the blaze may have been triggered by an explosion from a transformer within the facility.
