The Ghana National Fire Service has publicly apologised for what it refers to as “uncomplimentary comments” made by a member of its public relations team, ADOI Alex King Nartey, regarding a recent fire incident in the Adum area of Kumasi.

In an official statement, the Ghana National Fire Service expressed sincere and unreserved apologies to the Regional Minister and Chair of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) for any disrespectful remarks.

“On behalf of myself and the entire Ghana National Fire Service, we unreservedly extend our profound and sincerest regret for any unfortunate comment made against your good self and reputable office,” said the acting Chief Fire Officer of the Service, Daniella Ntow Sapong.

The statement further acknowledged the essential role played by the Regional Minister in the successful management of the fire incident.

“We appreciate your contribution, sacrifices, and untiring efforts that contributed to the Operational Response and Management of this unfortunate fire incident,” the statement emphasised.

The Ghana National Fire Service reassured the public that measures would be implemented to avert similar occurrences in the future.

“Kindly accept this apology and be informed of our profound and invaluable support towards the reduction of fire outbreaks in the Ashanti Region.”

In conclusion, the apology emphasised ongoing cooperation and support: “Please count on our valued and compassionate support at all times”.

The apology from the fire service follows an altercation between the Ashanti Regional Minister and ADOI Nartey after the Adum PZ market fire incident on March 21, 2025.

As firefighters worked to control the incident, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene visited the site and expressed his dissatisfaction upon observing what he perceived as an empty fire tender left at the scene.

He questioned the firefighters present about the absence of water in the tender, raising concerns about the fire service’s preparedness.

His comments highlighted the challenges that the service faces in such situations.

In response, Alex King Nartey, Public Relations Officer for the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), defended the service’s actions, noting that public outbursts or shouting cannot resolve the issues faced by firefighters.

Mr. Nartey stressed the importance of adequate resources and proper planning for effectively managing fire emergencies rather than relying solely on verbal criticism.
