GNAT urges swift review of Single Spine Pay Policy

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has renewed calls on the government to urgently review the Single Spine Pay Policy, saying delays continue to affect the morale and living conditions of workers across the country.

Speaking at GNAT’s 7th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference held in Accra on January 5, 2026, the association’s President, Reverend Isaac Owusu, said a review before the end of the year would bring meaningful improvements to salaries and conditions of service.

According to him, teachers and other public sector workers have waited long enough for adjustments that reflect current economic realities.

For many teachers at the conference, the appeal was not just about numbers on a payslip but about dignity, motivation and the ability to cater for their families without constant financial strain.

Reverend Owusu noted that a responsive pay system would help restore confidence among workers who feel stretched by rising costs.

President John Dramani Mahama, who addressed the gathering, assured teachers and organised labour that his administration is prepared to act.

He acknowledged concerns raised by the Trades Union Congress and said discussions were already underway to take another look at the policy alongside pension reforms.

“The time has come for us to look at it again, and I told organised labour that we are prepared to put together a working team to review the whole pension reform and see how we can improve it so that everybody feels secure retiring,” President Mahama said.

Beyond active workers, the President also spoke about retirees, stressing that no Ghanaian should face uncertainty after years of service.

He pledged a thorough review of pension policies aimed at ensuring a secure and dignified retirement, adding that a safe and supportive working environment remains a priority for his government.
