GNAT urges Education Minister to act over delayed CPD allowance

Tension is rising among teachers nationwide after the Controller and Accountant General’s Department announced that the Continuous Professional Development allowance will not be paid this month.

The update has created frustration among more than three hundred thousand teachers who were expecting the allowance as part of their yearly entitlement.

Teacher unions are calling on the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, and the Ghana Education Service to step in quickly to help calm tempers and prevent possible unrest.

According to the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the delay has unsettled many educators who rely on the allowance to support their professional growth.

The General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Tanko Musah, expressed the concerns of members in an interview with Labour Affairs correspondent Daniel Opoku.

He explained that the allowance, originally set at 1200 cedis and later increased to 2400 cedis, is captured in the collective agreement between teachers and the government.

It was last paid in September 2024, and both the Ministry of Education and the GES had assured teachers earlier this year that payment would be made on time.

However, on November 25, 2025, the Controller and Accountant General’s Department said the payment would be pushed to December 18 due to a technical challenge.

The sudden change has angered teachers who had already been informed that funds would arrive in November.

Musah said the situation has put union leaders under pressure.

“Members feel we misled them because we told them the money was coming in November, and now they think we are not being truthful,” he said.

He appealed to the Education Minister to intervene, noting that many teachers are anxious and frustrated. The unions say a swift response from the ministry and the GES is essential to calm the growing tension.
