The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has given the government until the end of June to grant them a 20% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) or face the wrath of over 240,000 teachers across the country.

GNAT General Secretary, Thomas Musah Tanko,  lamented how the delay was affecting the meager earnings of workers.

He stressed the delay had impacted the basic necessities of teachers.

“Things are now very difficult. I have spoken about this thing and I have been compelled under the circumstances because our members have been calling day and night. There is an uneasy calm among the entire membership, and there is the need for something to be done as soon as possible.

“As I said, we are talking about the basic necessities of life, the issues of water, food shelter, clothing, ability to be able to pay your daily expenses, things that will enable you to live as a human being,” he told TV3.

Earlier during the  2022 May Day celebration, organized labor appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to use his executive powers to grant workers at least a 20 percent Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) in the wake of the economic hardships being experienced in the country.

The Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr. Yaw Baah, addressed the parade and noted that “With the rising cost of living due to high inflation, we will like to appeal to you [President Akufo-Addo] to use your executive powers to grant a cost of living allowance (COLA) of at least 20 percent to all public service workers.”

Its been a month since the appeal was made but the government is yet to respond to the demands.
