GNAT calls for dedicated funding source to support pre-tertiary education

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has reiterated its call for a dedicated funding source to support pre-tertiary education in the country.

This comes amid ongoing concerns about the financing of Ghana’s education system, including the government’s approval of approximately GHC 31.7 billion to finance the Ministry of Education’s operations for the year 2025.

Speaking on April 1, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Tanko Musah stressed that dedicated funding is crucial to addressing educational financing challenges. He urged the government to move away from a piecemeal approach to funding education and instead implement a sustainable financing model.

“We need a dedicated fund. This is not the only item that we have in the education sector. We have the issue of school feeding and all other related matters. How do we intend to fund all those things?

“It is a good thing that the GETFund has been uncapped, but we want to see the allocation that will be made to get these things done.

“We must be able to agree and decide on how we intend to finance and fund all our educational expenditures. Aside from that, we must have a dedicated and consistent source of supply of resources,” he stated.
