The Ghana Meteorological Agency has announced its 2026 major rainy season forecast for southern Ghana, urging residents and institutions to prepare for intense rainfall and possible flooding in the months ahead.

According to the agency, the season will begin in March and end between July and August.

Above normal rainfall is expected between April and June along the eastern coastline and nearby inland communities, including Accra, Tema, Cape Coast, Saltpond, Asamankese, Akim Oda, Koforidua and Kade.

These areas face a heightened risk of floods and flash floods.

The forecast was presented during the launch of Meteorological Awareness Month. Minister for Communication, Digitalisation and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, said early warnings must lead to action at all levels.

The government is committed to reviewing and modernising existing laws and policies to align with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, IoT, and machine learning.

One of the key steps is upgrading the Ghana Meteorological Agency into an authority to give it more policy power,” he said.

He also cautioned residents against dumping refuse into drains, reminding communities that blocked gutters often worsen flooding and destroy homes and livelihoods.

Farmers have been advised to prepare for possible dry spells between March and April, which could affect crops and reduce water inflows into reservoirs.

The agency recommends supplementary irrigation, water conservation practices and the use of early maturing and drought-tolerant crop varieties.
