GMA Threatens To Withdraw Members From Bimbilla Hospital After Medical Superintendent Attack

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has threatened to withdraw their members from the Bimbilla Government Hospital over an attack on a medical superintendent.

This comes after some irate youth chased the medical superintendent of the facility, Adam Barhama, out of his office on Friday, August 11, 2023.

The agitated youth had earlier staged a protest against Mr Barhama and two staff members after the Bimbilla Hospital was disconnected from the water supply over unpaid bills.

It took the intervention of the police to calm the situation.

Reacting to the situation, GMA condemned the “lawless” action of the youth in the town.

According to a statement issued by GMA, their actions have put the lives of the hospital staff and property at risk.

The association, therefore, called on the appropriate authorities to call the youth to order and find an amicable solution to the issues at the hospital, or they will withdraw their services.

“We would like to emphasize that if the threats and acts that threaten lives and properties persist. We will be left with no choice but to ensure that no doctor returns to the facility either now or in the foreseeable future since their safety cannot be guaranteed,” the statement said.

The hospital in the Nanumba North Municipality of the Northern Region has recently faced many challenges.

The facility was recently disconnected from the water supply over GH¢240,000 debt in water bills.

Nurses at the hospital embarked on a sit-down strike in protest of the lack of water for their regular duties.

This led to the referral of patients to other health facilities in the area.
