GMA threatens strike over attacks on doctors and nurses

Dr. Frank Serebour, the President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), has issued a stern warning regarding the potential withdrawal of services by health professionals if the trend of violent attacks against them continues.

This warning comes in light of a distressing incident that occurred at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge), where a viral video showed relatives of a patient verbally and physically assaulting emergency staff, severely disrupting essential services.

In a joint statement with GMA General Secretary Dr. Richard Selormey, the Association vehemently condemned these violent acts, labelling them as “acts of impunity” that jeopardise both patient care and staff safety.

The GMA has called on the Ghana Police Service to take immediate action by arresting and prosecuting those responsible for the attacks.

They indicated that grievances should be voiced through appropriate channels rather than resorting to violence.

Furthermore, the Association expressed concern over the Health Minister’s friendly interaction with the primary suspect following the incident, asserting that such conduct only encourages further unruly behaviour.

They also urged the management of Ridge Hospital to thoroughly investigate the matter, address any legitimate concerns, extend medical and psychological support to the affected staff, and enhance security protocols.

Referencing the Labour Act, the GMA reminded both the government and the public that health workers are entitled to safeguard themselves against hazardous situations.

“If these senseless attacks continue, health workers would have to exercise their right to remove themselves from situations that present imminent and serious danger to our lives, safety or health,” the Association cautioned.
