GMA threatens nationwide strike in solidarity with KATH doctors

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has threatened to go on a nationwide strike if the concerns of doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) are not addressed.

Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) are embarking on an indefinite strike beginning March 13, 2024.

The decision to strike was triggered when over 20 doctors received eviction notices to leave their current residences.

Reacting to the doctors, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah said the doctors have no case.

He stressed that arrangements were being made with the private developer to provide funds to settle two years’ rent payment for each affected doctor.

The minister’s words did not sit well with the GMA.

The president of the GMA, Dr Frank Serebuor, noted the difficulty in relocating from a place of accommodation that some have occupied for over 30 years.

He added that several doctors have called on the association to complain about how they had been subjected to stress and frustration.

Dr Serebuor said if the Ashanti Regional Minister fails to solve the accommodation problems, all doctors in the country will put down their tools.

“If he pushes us to the wall, we will take a decision to go on a nationwide strike in solidarity with our colleagues at KATH. We are getting there and he should stop making such comments.

“In any case, the private developer did not have to engage the doctors who were allocated the residencies by Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. They should have rather dealt with management of KATH to write to the doctors and medical staff,” he said.
