The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has outlined a roadmap for the strike action declared by organised labour for its members.
On Friday, July 12, organised labour declared an indefinite nationwide strike starting Monday, July 15, 2024.
This is in protest of the proposed sale of 60 per cent shares in some hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Hotel, which is owned by MP for Abetifi and Minister of Agriculture Dr Bryan Acheampong.
Due to this, GMA, which is part of organised labour, has directed its members to gradually withdraw their services nationwide, effective Monday, July 15.
In a statement, GMA said, “The National Executive Council (NEC), following an emergency meeting on 12th July 2024 to discuss the development, directs the following roadmap for industrial action.”
The roadmap is as follows:
- 15th to 17th July 2024 – Withdrawal of Out Patient Department (OPD) services
- 18th to 21st July 2024 – Withdrawal of Emergency Services
- From 22nd July 2024 – Total Withdrawal of ALL services.”
“This is to press home the demand for Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to terminate the sale of sixty per cent (60%) of its shares in the four (4) Hotels,” the statement said.
The strike announcement comes a day after the National Pensions Regulatory Commission (NPRA) approved the transaction.
The NPRA initially suspended the sale of SSNIT’s stake to Rock City Hotel but gave the green light for the deal to proceed on Thursday, July 11, 2024.
Following an emergency meeting by organised labour on Friday, July 12, the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress, Dr Yaw Baah, urged all workers to abstain from their work on Monday, July 15.
