GMA demands apology from Health Minister over dismissal of TTH CEO
The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has demanded an unqualified apology from the Minister of Health and the Member of Parliament for Tamale North over what it describes as an unjust and public attack on medical staff at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).
In a statement dated April 23, 2025, the GMA condemned the treatment of doctors during a recent visit by the Minister and MP, as well as the sudden dismissal of the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer.
The association described the move as “an affront to due process” and “an abuse of power,” calling it a blow to morale within the health sector.
The GMA also criticised the handling of a patient’s death, which sparked public backlash and led to an unannounced media review at the emergency unit.
They argued that the media engagement compromised patient confidentiality, posed legal risks, and prejudged the matter before a proper investigation was conducted.
One of the doctors at the centre of the controversy, the head of the Emergency Unit, has reportedly received threats and become a target of online harassment.
The association warned that such behaviour, if unchecked, could undermine staff safety and the integrity of the healthcare system.
“We stand firmly with our colleagues and demand a retraction and apology from the Minister and the MP. Doctors cannot continue working under fear and media trials,” the GMA said.
The association urged the hospital to provide psychological support to affected staff and to follow proper channels in resolving grievances.
It also called for a broader conversation on how systemic health challenges can be addressed through constructive engagement rather than public scapegoating.
