The Ghana Medical Association has called for a strict adherence to the safety protocols laid down by authorities, as the country continues to battle the deadly coronavirus.
The association, in a statement noted that the testing sites and health facilities have witnessed a sharp increase in the number of positive cases over the past few weeks.
Greater Accra and the Ashanti Region are said to have an alarming daily positivity rate, ranging between 40% to 50%.
“This escalation in cases is likely driven by the Omicron Variant of the SARS-COV-2 virus which is highly proving to be more transmissible than the hitherto dreaded Delta variant which dominated our third wave of COVID-19,” the statement explained.
Based on the above statistics, the association, has tasked the government to either regulate or restrict social activities during the yuletide to avoid a potentially deadly fourth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
It also asked the Ghana Police Service, all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDA’s) as well as the Ghana Tourism Authority to strictly enforce all safety protocols during such festivities.
“As a matter of urgency, social activities such as parties, nightclubs, church services, market activities, funerals, and other mass gatherings of such nature should be regulated or restricted,” the statement added.
It feared there may be dire consequences for the general public come 2022, if Ghanaians continued to disregard the protocols in place.
Meanwhile, it also urged the public to get vaccinated.
“All Ghanaians should take advantage of the Ghana Health Service and for that matter government’s drive to vaccinate all Ghanaians of age 15 years and above.”
