The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has cautioned foreign nationals in the country against attempting to acquire Ghanaian citizenship through false declarations.
The caution follows the recent arrest and prosecution of two persons, Nwachen Edwin Ndum, a Cameroonian, and Samuel Sagbo, a Togolese national.
According to a statement signed by ACI Michael Amoako-Atta, the Head of Public Affairs of the GIS, both individuals entered Ghana illegally and sought assistance from some Ghanaians to obtain Ghanaian birth certificates and Ghana Cards.
The said documents were then used in an attempt to secure Ghanaian passports.
The GIS revealed that both offenders have been sentenced to 36 months imprisonment with hard labour for the crime.
The service also highlighted a rise in such offences and emphasized that those arrested have been prosecuted accordingly.
Additionally, the GIS warned Ghanaians against aiding non-citizens in acquiring birth certificates, Ghana Cards, or passports.
The service stressed that such practices threaten national sovereignty and security and assured that anyone found guilty will face the full force of the law.
The GIS remains committed to strictly enforcing immigration regulations and will not compromise on its mandate to uphold the law.
