The Government and the Hospital Pharmacists Association of Ghana (GHOSPA) has issued a public advisory against the excessive consumption of alcohol and the abuse of drugs during the Christmas season, warning that such behaviors can lead to significant health risks.
As stated by the Association, the holiday season often sees an increase in the likelihood of individuals misusing alcohol and medications, spurred by celebrations and social events.
GHOSPA indicates that this pattern can result in serious health issues if not addressed.
In an interview on Friday, December 26, the President of the Association, Dr. Emmanuel Owiafe, called on the public to practice moderation and to be aware of the effects of alcohol and drugs on their health.
He elaborated that the excessive consumption of these substances can negatively impact essential organs, such as the lungs, heart, and other bodily systems.
Dr. Owiafe also recommended that individuals seek professional advice prior to taking any medication. “If you need medication, you should speak to the appropriate prescriber or pharmacist so that the right medicine is given in the correct quantity and taken according to the prescribed regimen,” he stated.
The Association urged the public to prioritize their health during the festive season by consuming alcohol responsibly, steering clear of drug misuse, and obtaining professional medical advice when needed.
