Ghana’s security agencies full of puppets, sycophants – Methodist Bishop
The immediate past Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Most Reverend Titus Awotwi Pratt has attributed the inability of security agencies to fight crime to undue political interference.
He attributed the inability of state security agencies to combat crime to the manner in which appointments into the security services are made, saying it is done more on the considerations of political cronyism rather than on merit .
“In some advanced countries people occupy places because they merit it and not by appointment, look at our security agencies; puppets of the ruling government and so they are not able to arrest thieves who ride public cars and are fed by the state, people who earn more and better and enjoy free benefits occupying official houses with chauffeured driven cars,” he said.
Expressing his frustration, the Reverend Minister said, the people who enjoy the most from the state resources are those who steal the most from it.
He said the indebtedness of Security Agencies heads to the appointing authorities prevents them from arresting government appointees who steal from the state.
“Go to the prisons, people are arrested because they stole a mere chicken or goat, some are remanded for years and yet (those) who openly steal walk our streets, what kind of society is this” he quizzed.
The Reverend Minister was speaking at the 1 year anniversary thanksgiving service of the Consolidated Bank Ghana in Accra.
