Ghana’s 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic will officially be dissolved today, Monday, January 6, 2025.

The dissolution of the hung Parliament will pave the way for the establishment of the 9th Parliament.

The event will be conducted during a final sitting, presided over by the Speaker of Parliament, the Right Honourable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.

Following the dissolution, the newly-elected legislators will be sworn in at midnight, signifying the commencement of the 9th Parliament.

Again, the inaugural session will welcome a Speaker and two deputies who will steer the affairs of the House for four years.

During this session, legislators will wrap up all outstanding business and formally bid farewell to the chamber as their term draws to a close.

The 8th Parliament has been one of the most closely contested in Ghana’s history, beginning with an equal distribution of seats between the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC)—137 seats each, alongside one Independent Member of Parliament.
