Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has expressed confidence that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will return to power in the next general elections.

During the parliamentary session on Monday, December 16, the Effutu MP assured Ghanaians that the NPP is prepared to reflect on its shortcomings and rebuild as a formidable opposition.

“The people of Ghana have heard them [the NDC]. They’ve given them the mandate.

“Our job in opposition is to do what we’re supposed to do—keep their feet to the fire. This is not something that has to be celebrated in perpetuity. They would have to be magnanimous in victory, as we see the next four years,” he stated.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin emphasised the party’s commitment to self-assessment and strategic planning to win back the trust of Ghanaians.

“We are very positive that come 2028, Ghanaians will return us into office. We are going to take stock, look at where we got it wrong, correct our mistakes, and come together as a team.”

Additionally, the majority leader pledged that the NPP would act responsibly in opposition, focus on constructive debate, and hold the government accountable.

“As a formidable opposition, as a formidable minority, not to be disruptive, no violence, no chaos, but to act within the confines of the law, argue on issues, and distinguish ourselves for the people of Ghana to know that we are NPP.”

Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s remark comes after the Electoral Commission declared John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as the President-elect with 56.55%.

The NDC also secured an overwhelming parliamentary majority with over 180 seats, reducing the NPP’s representation to approximately 80 seats.
