Ghanaians demands update on El Wak Stadium tragedy – Minority

The Minority in Parliament has called on the government to provide a comprehensive update on investigations into the deadly stampede at the El Wak Stadium, describing the incident as a national tragedy that demands transparency and accountability.

Addressing a press conference in Accra on January 8, Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei said Ghanaians deserve clear answers about what led to the deaths of job seekers during a recruitment exercise.

According to her, the public must be informed about failures in planning and crowd control, as well as any sanctions against officials found responsible.

The Minority described the incident as deeply painful, noting that many of the victims were young people simply seeking employment in an already difficult economic climate.

They linked the tragedy to growing desperation among job seekers, worsened by unemployment and recent dismissals of public sector workers, including teachers, nurses and administrators.

“No young person should lose their life in the search for work. Citizens deserve honesty about what went wrong and assurance that this will never happen again,” the Minority said.

Beyond the El Wak Stadium incident, the Minority also renewed calls for greater parliamentary oversight of the Gold for Reserves programme.

They urged the formation of a bipartisan committee to investigate claims that Ghana recorded a US 214 million dollar loss under the initiative, as referenced in an IMF report.

The opposition insisted that Parliament has a constitutional responsibility to examine all contracts, pricing structures and financial records linked to the programme.

While government-affiliated institutions, including the Ghana Gold Board, have disputed claims of losses, the Minority maintained that only a thorough and independent probe can restore public confidence.

The statement concluded with broader demands for accountability in governance, arguing that Ghanaians deserve clarity on how national resources are managed and whether any misconduct has occurred.
