Ghanaian Man Who Shot 2 Relatives And Fired At Officers In US Slapped With 6 Charges

Caleb Boateng, a 24-year-old Ghanaian in the United States accused of shooting two of his family members and firing back at the police has been slapped with six charges.

The suspect was arraigned in the Central District Court on Tuesday, July 11, 2023.

The six charges include two counts of assault to murder (armed), two counts of assault and battery with a firearm, illegal possession of a firearm, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, among other charges.

The court presided by Judge Janet J. McGuiggan ordered Caleb to be held without bail after he pleads not guilty.

It will be recalled that on Friday, July 7, 2023, the Worcester Police Department in Massachusetts, USA in a statement noted that a gentleman has shot two of his family members at their Colby Avenue home.

The incident was reported to have happened around 8:30 in the morning on Friday.

The police upon arriving at the scene were attacked by the suspect who intended to fire back at them.

The report says it took approximately 13 hours for the police to successfully arrest the suspect.

After being hospitalized in the days after his arrest, Boateng made his initial court appearance at about 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday where he was accused of six unlawful offences.

At the court, the suspect was accused of shooting his mother, Philomena Boateng, and his brother, Obed O. Boateng, during a confrontation at about 8:30 a.m. on Friday. Court records show the mother was shot in the right arm and right thigh, and that the brother was shot in the abdomen and left hand. Both were hospitalized.

Philomena Boateng was still in the hospital Tuesday afternoon, Assistant District Attorney Karen Bell said as reported by local media in Worcester. When asked by McGuiggan if Obed Boateng was still in the hospital, Bell said she did not know.

Meantime, Philomena and Obed have been granted restraining orders against Caleb, according to court records.

When asked by the judge if he wanted a court-appointed attorney, Caleb Boateng politely answered, “Yes, Ma’am,”

Caleb Boateng is not licensed to possess a firearm and/or ammunition, according to court records.

Caleb Boateng is being held without the right to bail pending a dangerousness hearing on Monday in Courtroom 23.

No motive for the shooting was revealed in court on Tuesday.
