Ghanaian duo Mary Amponsah and Comfort Yeboah make final shortlist for 2023 CAF Women’s Young Player of the Year award
Ghanaian duo of Mary Amponsah and Comfort Yeboah have made the final shortlist for the 2023 CAF Women’s Young Player of the Year award.
The enterprising pair had a decent campaign with Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the year under review and has therefore been recognized by the continental football governing body.
The Black Princesses duo were explosive for Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the 2022/23 season as the club swept all titles domestically.
Both players played a huge role when their outfit won the Women’s Premier League title and the FA Cup respectively. They were also influential when the club clinched the WAFU B Women’s Champions League title to secure qualification to the main tournament in Ivory Coast.
Amponsah was adjudged the Most Valuable Player and golden shoe at the 2023 WAFU Zone B Women’s Champions League qualifiers after bagging seven goal to help her side clinch the trophy in Nigeria.
She won the top scorer and best player award at the Ghana FA Awards following her scintillating performance last season that saw her bagged 16 goals in nineteen matches.
Yeboah, is also one of the best full-backs on the continent and her recent performance earned her a debut call-up to the senior women’s national team, the Black Queens under Coach Nora Hauptle in the 2024 Olympics Games qualifiers.
Meanwhile, the pair will have to beat competition from Nigerian trio of Esther Ajakaye, Deborah Abiodun and Oluwatosin Demehin.
Other players in contention include Nesryne El Chad (Morocco), Hapsatou Diallo (Senegal), Thubelihle Shamase (South Africa) Winifreda Gerald (Tanzania) and Ugandan star Fauzia Najjemba.
