Suspected terrorists have shot a Ghanaian truck driver transporting food items from Niger at the Burkina Faso border.
They reportedly attacked and burnt three trucks.
The vehicles carried foodstuffs, including beans, cowhide and onions, headed for Kwadaso Market in Kumasi.
According to one of the owners of the trucks, Masawudu Dambala, his driver who was shot was the one leading the group after they waited for military escort for days without success.
“They were standing there waiting for escort, but the escort was not coming. So, one truck decided to use the Dori road and succeeded.
“So the rest also decided to try their best and see. The terrorists chased the trucks on motorbikes and ordered them to stop, but they refused, not knowing there were a lot of their people ahead. They started shooting them,” he narrated.
Mr Dambala added that some drivers escaped, but his driver was not so lucky.
However, he said the driver survived the gunshot and is receiving treatment in Niger.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that similar attacks in the past resulted in the deaths of three drivers and the burning of over 10 Ghanaian trucks.
Due to increased terrorist activity in the region, long-distance truckers have stopped using the Dori route from Niger into Burkina Faso.
Ghana heavily depends on onion imports from Niger for its markets.
Onion sellers at major market centres in Accra and Kumasi have indicated that prices of onions have increased due to the challenges they are currently facing.
