Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has disclosed that the government will collaborate with the Twasam family to give a befitting funeral to the late Ghana footballer Christian Atsu.
He revealed this at a short ceremony at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to receive the mortal remains of the fallen Ghana star.
Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was present after President Akufo-Addo directed that the late footballer be received and accorded state protocol.
“The state will be fully involved with the family in providing him a befitting burial,” Dr Bawumia announced.
Atsu’s body arrived in the country on Sunday evening, February 19, 2023, at around 7:30 pm local time.
The remains were brought back to Ghana by a Turkish Airways flight, accompanied by his twin sister and the Ghana Ambassador to Turkey, Francisca Ashietey-Odunton.
The casket was draped in the country’s national flag and was escorted by a military party.
Also at the airport to receive the former Black Star player were his family, government officials, Ghana Football Association (GFA) officials, and some football fans.
The emotions of those present were palpable.
The footballer died in Turkey due to massive earthquakes, which have claimed over 40,000 lives.
The body of the 31-year-old was recovered early Saturday morning, and arrangements were made for transportation to Ghana.
