Ghana unlikely to gain economic boost from Trump era — Economist

Financial Economist, Professor Lord Mensah, has warned that Ghana may not have any economic benefits from a Trump re-election.

This, he said, was due to the country’s pressing debt challenges.

Professor Mensah explained that while Republican administrations often spur economic expansion in the United States, Ghana’s current financial challenges—particularly its high debt levels—could make it difficult for the country to take advantage of any positive economic spillovers from a Trump-led U.S. economy.

He suggested that without addressing these internal constraints, Ghana’s ability to benefit from U.S.-driven economic growth under a Trump presidency would remain limited.

“He [Donald Trump] also stands for business and I can tell you that anytime Republicans are in power, that’s when you see the American economy pick up internally and investor confidence grows within the American economy. But then with Ghana’s situation now, I don’t think when it comes to business, we are going to get many economic spillovers because of our debt situation because no country will like to deal with us when it comes to business.

“Donald Trump will not encourage giving aid or freebies as the Democrats will do. But if it turns up to be business that they have to do with Ghana, then obviously we are not in a good position to have business with America now looking at our debt situation. Donald Trump stands for business. For him any decision that he is taking has to do with mutual benefit,” Prof. Lord Mensah said.

Donald Trump emerged victorious in a closely fought 2024 U.S. presidential election, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris to secure a second term in office.

This win marks a historic comeback, making Trump one of the few U.S. presidents in history to serve two non-consecutive terms.

In his campaign, Trump pledged to make economic growth a central focus, aiming to boost job creation, reduce taxes, and drive investment that benefits American workers.

Additionally, he has committed to enacting comprehensive immigration reforms, promising to tighten border security while restructuring pathways to legal residency.

With his return to the White House, Trump’s renewed agenda is expected to shape U.S. policy across economic and immigration fronts in the coming years.
