Ghana Shippers Authority addresses Tema port delays, assures of efforts to resolve challenges
The Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA) has responded to delays in container delivery and evacuation at Tema Port, attributing the issues to scanner breakdowns at terminals and system glitches.
In a public announcement dated December 24, 2024, the authority acknowledged the impact of these challenges on cargo clearance and outlined measures to address them.
“It has come to the notice of GSA that shippers have experienced significant delays in the delivery and evacuation of containers from the port of Tema, due to either the breakdown of the scanners at Terminals or system glitches, with attendant grave impact on the entire cargo clearance process,” the statement read.
The GSA highlighted the continuous breakdown of the scanner at MPS Terminal 3 and intermittent malfunctions of the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) as major contributors to the delays.
However, the authority assured stakeholders of ongoing efforts to resolve these persistent challenges, stating, “GSA is aware of the strenuous effort being made to resolve the persistent challenges.”
The announcement reminded the shipping community of their rights: “No shipper using a port in Ghana should pay for costs associated with delays not occasioned by the shipper.”
The GSA urged cargo interest holders, consignees, and service providers to promptly report any such charges to the authority for investigation and potential refunds if systemic failures are identified.
“GSA will continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure efficient delivery of service in the shipping sector for the benefit of all,” the announcement further assured.
Signed by Charles Darling Sey, Eastern Zonal Manager, on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer, the GSA also extended warm wishes for a peaceful business season and happy holidays.
