Ghana sacks Chris Hughton after shambolic Afcon performance

Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton has been sacked after the Ghana national team failed to progress with a winless streak at the 2023 Afcon in Côte d’Ivoire.

Barely 24 hours after the Black Stars crashed out of the tournament, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has shown Chris Hughton the exit.

The Black Stars managed only two points in Group B, with a shocking 2-1 defeat by Cape Verde in their opener and drawing 2-2 with both Egypt and Mozambique.

The country had high hopes of winning the tournament for a fifth time but ended up with a dagger to the heart as the wait continued after 42 years for another Afcon glory.

Ghanaians had to endure a painful experience after the team surrendered their lead in two consecutive matches, failing to qualify yet again from the group stages of another Afcon tournament despite huge expenditure.

In a move that may seem like damage control, the GFA announced on Tuesday evening “that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior national team with immediate effect”.

The football governing body did not provide reasons or further details but added that the Executive Council has also decided to dissolve the Black Stars technical team.

The GFA said a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars will be provided in the coming days.

The 65-year-old former Brighton manager was appointed head coach of the Ghana national team in February 2022, ending his tenure in less than a year.
