Ghana records lowest active cases since April 19
Ghana has registered the least number of COVID-19 active cases in the last six months, theghanareport.com has found.
The current active case count is 908.
By April 19, Ghana’s recorded total cases had hit 834. This was accompanied by nine deaths and 99 recoveries.
This left the country with an active case of 726 at the time.
Since then, the country’s active cases has soared until the Ghana Health Service (GHS) disclosed on Wednesday, September 2, that active cases have fallen to 908.
Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, provided the latest update on Ghana’s infections.
On Tuesday, September 1, they had recorded 1,063 active cases. Within 24 hours, this has dropped to 908.
The record gives Dr Kuma-Aboagye confidence that Ghana “is on a downward trend but we can only sustain that if we continue doing exactly what we have been doing over the last few months that has brought us this far”.
Commenting on Ghana’s recently re-launched GH COVID 19 Tracker, Dr Kuma-Aboagye said the technology innovation would be very helpful in tackling the contagion.
The improved version is “the only app in Ghana and Africa to be approved to have a geofencing for easy contact tracing and live tracking by GHS and information gathering by users of the app”.
Dr Kuma-Aboagye pointed out that the app will be useful in tracking future infectious diseases but cautioned that it does not provide a diagnosis or prescription for medication.
Ghana has eased restrictions with the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) opening for international flights on September 1.
But travellers must be in possession of a COVID-19 negative PCR test result from an accredited laboratory in the country of origin.
The test should have been done not more than 72 hours before the scheduled departure time from the country of origin.
Dr Kuma-Aboagye said they have collaborated with airport officials to digitize their systems and will connect with a continental platform known as PANABIOS to verify tests results carried by passengers.
Ghana is piloting the African Union (AU) driven PANABIOS platform to share information towards tackling the disease on the continent.
The country first recorded cases on March 12, 2020.
Ghana’s total confirmed cases stands at 44,460 while recoveries/discharge are 43,121. The total deaths registered are 276.
