Ghana Marks UNWTO World Tourism Day in Wa

The celebration of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s (UNWTO) World Tourism Day in Ghana is taking place in the Upper West Regional capital – Wa, today, September 27, 2022.

The UNWTO’s World Tourism Day is observed every year on September 27 to foster awareness among the international community about the importance of tourism and its social, economic, political, and cultural values.

Before the celebration, the Ghana tourism authority had toured some sites such as Nakore Mosque and Royal Cosy Hills (Jirapa Dubai), among others.

The celebration will be climaxed with a grand durbar of chiefs and queenmothers at the office of the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs .

This year’s celebration is on the theme: Rethinking Tourism”.

This is to focus on how the country can accelerate tourism recovery through a collaborative engagement of all stakeholders around a shared vision to build a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient sector.

The official World Tourism Day celebration is being held in Bali, Indonesia, to highlight the shift towards tourism as a crucial pillar of development.

As part of the celebration, Ghana has developed a sub-theme dubbed; “Promoting Domestic Tourism for Wealth Creation in Communities”, to grow the interest of Ghanaians in tourism.

In 2021, The Hohoe municipality came to life on September 27, 2021, as the Ghana Tourism Authority took the annual ‘World Tourism Day’ celebration to the Volta Region.

Last year’s event was on under the theme “Tourism for Inclusive Growth”.

The Volta Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Alexander Nketia in an interview said “the event starts on September 24 where stakeholders in the private and public sector in the tourism industry will engage to deliberate on development partnership”.
