Ghana launches free obstetric fistula surgeries at five hospitals

Women suffering from obstetric fistula in Ghana now have access to free surgical care, thanks to a nationwide initiative led by the Partnership to End Fistula in Ghana (PEFIC).

The program, supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has designated five hospitals across the country to offer these life-restoring surgeries.

The selected facilities include Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ho Teaching Hospital, Tamale West Hospital, Mercy Women Catholic Hospital in Mankessim, and Upper West Regional Hospital.

These hospitals will provide not only surgical repairs but also transportation, two weeks of recovery care, and reintegration support for women often pushed to the margins of society.

Obstetric fistula is a devastating childbirth injury caused by prolonged or obstructed labour. It results in chronic incontinence and often leads to social isolation, stigma, and deep emotional trauma.

Many women lose their babies during delivery, and the condition can strip them of their dignity and place in their communities.

“It is not just about performing the surgery,” said Dela Bright Gle, Programme Specialist for Reproductive Health at UNFPA.

“We must ensure each woman is transported safely, given a place to heal, and supported to rejoin her family and community.”

In Kumasi alone, 50 women were screened, and 15 qualified for surgery. Sadly, three were turned away due to health complications.

Health professionals like Dr. Baffour Opoku at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital continue to raise concerns about the severe mental health toll this condition takes.

Depression, skin infections, and social rejection are also common in patients.

The hope is that, through awareness and care, more women will come forward and find the help they need to heal and reclaim their lives.
