Ghana drops in global peace rankings, now 7th in Sub-Saharan Africa
Ghana has fallen six places in the 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI), ranking 61st globally and slipping to 7th place in Sub-Saharan Africa, according to the latest report by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).
The updated rankings, released this month, show Ghana now lags behind several regional peers in terms of peacefulness, including Mauritius (26th), Botswana (43rd), Namibia (50th), The Gambia (55th), Sierra Leone (57th), and Madagascar (59th).
This marks a continued decline in Ghana’s peace performance compared to previous years, raising concerns about the country’s overall stability and security environment.

In 2024, Ghana ranked 55th globally and 4th in Sub-Saharan Africa, down from 51st globally in 2023.
Ghana’s downward trend over the past five years, from 38th in 2021 to 61st in 2025, signals growing domestic tensions.
The overall decline mirrors broader regional and global trends.
Sub-Saharan Africa continues to face escalating conflict rates, with an average peace score drop of 0.17% in 2025.
Globally, peace has deteriorated to its lowest level since the GPI began tracking in 2008.
