Ghana considering visa waivers for African countries – Foreign Minister
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has disclosed that Ghana is exploring the possibility of granting visa waivers to other African countries.
While speaking in an interview, the minister said the government is already planning to join other countries who already have the policy in place.
This comes after African countries such as Rwanda, Kenya, and South Africa recently took the lead.
Ms Botchwey said the government is working on the visa waiver agreement with the Ministries of Interior and Tourism and will come out with a decision soon.
She added that the government is also planning to attract people of African descent in the diaspora to Ghana as a “pilgrimage country”.
The governments of Ghana and South Africa recently signed a visa waiver agreement for holders of ordinary passports, which will permit citizens to stay in both countries for a period of 90 days within a year.
This agreement means citizens of both countries without visas can depart from and stay in both countries.
This new agreement took effect on November 1, 2023.
This agreement signals the growing friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
