Ghana condemns military takeover in Guinea-Bissau
The Government of Ghana has condemned the military coup in Guinea-Bissau, characterising it as an unconstitutional act that poses a threat to democratic governance in the West African country.
In a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs dated Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Ghana expressed its “profound concern” over the coup d’état carried out by elements of the Guinea-Bissau military, noting that this action disrupts the electoral process following the peaceful presidential and legislative elections held on November 23.
The statement indicated that the coup undermines the democratic will of the people of Guinea-Bissau and has hindered the expected announcement of the election results, which were scheduled for November 27, 2025.
Ghana called upon all parties involved to pursue peaceful, transparent, and legally recognised means to address any electoral grievances.
The government also demanded the immediate restoration of constitutional order and underscored the importance of safeguarding the rights and security of both citizens and foreign nationals.
Particular concern was expressed for the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission currently present in Guinea-Bissau, with Ghana insisting that their safety and freedom of movement must be assured without delay.
Ghana further urged the people of Guinea-Bissau to maintain calm and refrain from actions that could heighten tensions.
The statement reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to supporting ECOWAS and the African Union in coordinating a regional response to the crisis, emphasising the importance of adhering to established continental protocols regarding democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule.
