Ghana Card Won’t Be Used To Vote In 2024 – EC Boss Assures

Contrary to claims, the Electoral Commission has once again assured that the Ghana Card will not be used to vote during the 2024 general elections.

The commission said it has no intentions of using the card and would continue to provide voter identification cards for use in elections.

The EC Chairperson Jean Mensa gave this assurance when she appeared before Parliament on Tuesday, February 28.

“Mr Speaker, I wish to emphasize that the Ghana Card will not be used to vote in the 2024 elections. The Ghana Card is only a requirement to register as a voter. Once, you present your Ghana card and successfully register as a voter, you will be issued a voter card that bears the code of your region, your district, and your electoral area…the Ghana Card does not have these features and therefore will not be used to vote in the general elections,”

Madam Mensah maintained that the commission has no interest in disenfranchising anyone, but would instead ensure that only qualified Ghanaians are enrolled on the voters’ list.

“I will like to emphasize that this constitutional instrument and its provisions are not aimed at disenfranchising Ghanaians. The registration process will be inclusive and participatory and it will make it easier to capture all those who will otherwise have been excluded in the limited registration exercise.

“It is important to rehash that the use of the Ghana card as the sole means of identification will ensure and guarantee the credibility of our register. It will prevent the enrollment of minors in our register. It will prevent foreigners from voting and it will eliminate the guarantor system which is prone to abuse,” she added.

Already, the Deputy Chairman of the EC, Dr Eric Bossman Asare and the Deputy Chair of the Commission in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, on separate occasions have addressed the same concern in the hearts of Ghanaians.
