The Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) has elected Mr Bernard Quartey as its new president after the federation’s congress held last Saturday at the Media Centre of the Accra Stadium.
Mr Quartey of the Ghana Immigration who was the former Treasurer of the federation managed to defeat the incumbent head, Mr George Lamptey, by 14 votes in a keenly contested election that saw him poling 59 votes as against Lamptey’s 45 votes.
In all 115 delegates were eligible to vote but ten were absent.
The elective congress had most of the stakeholders in amateur boxing present.
All-inclusive administration
After being declared the winner by the Election Supervisor, Mr Hussein Akuetteh Addy, Mr Quartey promised to ensure an all-inclusive administration that would draw on the experience and knowledge of people from various quarters to see to the development of the sport.
“I am a student of amateur boxing and I believe in all-inclusiveness. We are going to make amateur boxing great again,” he noted.
Mr Lamptey, who led the sport to win a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics this year, was surprised at the result; yet he told the media he had accepted the verdict of the delegates and congratulated the winner.
The former president who is a Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) Board member promised to offer his support and advice to the new executives.
Other executives
The GBF executive board includes Mr Dauda Fuseini, who was elected as the First Vice-President after defeating his rival, Alhaji Mohammed Samadu, by 40 votes.
Mr Fuseni had 63 votes while Alhaji Samadu polled 23 votes with Abdul Rashid Williams (Believer) polling just 17 votes.
The congress elected two new board members — Alhaji Issaka Abdulai Paugasur (83 votes) and Mr Dagadu Enam Foster (53 votes) — while Mr Solomon Otu Lartey and Mr Mustapha Nettey were elected unopposed as the Second Vice-President and the Treasurer, respectively.
