Ghana becomes Africa’s 2nd country to get knowledge and skills portal
Ghana has made a significant leap in educational technology by becoming the second country in Africa to launch a Knowledge and Skills Portal.
This innovative platform, unveiled in Accra on September 17, 2024, provides access to over 5 million online library archives, learning resources, and educational tools.
The portal was launched by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Communications.
It was developed by Impomtuo Technologies, a fully Ghanaian-owned company, with support from telecommunications leader MTN and funding from the World Bank.
At the launch, Communications Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful expressed her enthusiasm for the platform.
She highlighted its potential to make knowledge accessible to students of all ages, regardless of their location.
The portal is designed to align with the approved curriculum, ensuring the resources are relevant and up-to-date.
This initiative marks a significant advancement in Ghana’s educational access and digital learning.
“Only Egypt has a similar platform. Ours has AI integrated with other features and will be the best in Africa,” she said.
The Minister expressed strong optimism that the new platform will empower students with the knowledge and resources they need to thrive in the digital era.
She highlighted the inclusion of TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) courses and modules as a valuable feature, noting that it will enhance the skills of technical students.
Additionally, she emphasized that the platform will provide a marketing opportunity for Ghanaian publishers, allowing them to upload and sell digital copies of their work.
On his part, Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Adutwum also addressed the ongoing transformation within the education sector. He expressed disbelief at any claims suggesting that Ghana’s education system is deteriorating, given the significant advancements and changes occurring.
The Knowledge and Skills Portal is now accessible at www.gksb.gov.gh.
