Ghana has officially joined the ranks of progressive African countries granting visa-free travel to holders of African passports.

This historic policy, effective January 1, 2025, was announced by outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his final State of the Nation Address.

President Akufo-Addo emphasised the importance of the initiative in fostering continental unity, aligning with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“I am proud to have approved visa-free travel to Ghana for all African passport holders, with effect from the beginning of this year,” he stated. “This is the logical next step to the African Continental Free Trade Area and the workings of the largest trading block in the world. All these are essential elements to the realisation of the AU’s Agenda 2063, which envisages an integrated and connected Africa by 2063.”

With this move, Ghana joins Rwanda, Seychelles, The Gambia, and Benin in promoting seamless travel within Africa.

The visa-free policy is expected to enhance tourism, trade, and investment while cementing Ghana’s role as a leader in driving African integration.

As the host country for the AfCFTA Secretariat, Ghana’s decision underscores its strategic commitment to fostering economic collaboration and political unity across the continent.

The initiative not only facilitates mobility for African travellers but also positions Ghana as a hub for innovation, cooperation, and continental progress.
