Ghana Bauxite Company resumes operations after staff riot

The Ghana Bauxite Company has resumed operations after a riot by staff that led to the closure of the mine.

Mine Manager at the Ghana Bauxite Company, Emmanuel Agyepong said the mine is operating at half capacity and on a 12-hour shift for now.

“They resumed operations on June 25, 2019. We use to produce 24 hours a day but because of the strike by the outsource workers, we are producing half and we are making about 2,500 tonnes per day.”

“The atmosphere is also fine because we have soldiers and police on site guarding the operations. Everything is under control. The outsource workers, most of them are coming out to fill forms and apply. Once you get the forms you sit down and see how best you can assist.”

The aggrieved staff of the bauxite company set vehicles and other properties of the company on fire during their protest.

They set ablaze several offices including that of the Human Resource Manager of the company.

The workers were protesting poor working conditions and meagre salaries.

This is not the first time workers of the Bauxite Mining Company have protested over conditions of service.

Some workers in March 2019 threatened to walk off the job unless their working conditions are improved.
