Ghana assures justice for student who died in Latvia

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has assured the family of a Ghanaian student, Nana Agyei Ahyia, of the government’s commitment to pursuing justice following his death in Latvia.

In a Facebook post, Mr. Ablakwa stated that he invited the grieving family to a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra on Monday, December 22, 2025, where he formally expressed the government’s condolences and updated them on the actions taken thus far.

He revealed that the Ministry promptly sent a fact-finding mission from Ghana’s Embassy in Germany, which is concurrently accredited to Latvia, to collect information regarding the circumstances of the incident.

According to the Minister, the team has since provided a preliminary report to the Ministry.

The Foreign Affairs Minister mentioned that Latvian authorities have officially confirmed that investigations into the death of Nana Agyei Ahyia are still ongoing and have not yet been concluded.

In a further demonstration of the government’s resolve, Mr. Ablakwa announced that he has formally informed the Latvian government of his intention to travel to Latvia to engage with his counterpart and the investigators handling the case.

He disclosed that the planned delegation will include representatives from Nana Agyei Ahyia’s family.

Mr. Ablakwa also indicated that the government will consult independent experts to analyse all investigative reports, particularly the anticipated final report from Latvian authorities, to inform the country’s subsequent actions in the interest of justice.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Ghanaians abroad and ensuring accountability in cases involving Ghanaian citizens overseas, emphasising that the state will pursue the matter to its logical conclusion.
