President of Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) Kudjoe Finaoo has offered reasons for this year’s President’s Cup late kick-off.
The match, which will see GPL defending champions Hearts of Oak clash with current league leaders and bitter rivals Asante Kotoko, is scheduled for a late 6 pm kick-off under floodlight, GHALCA, who are organisers announced on Tuesday.
“In our last two congresses, we brought this issue up for review, we brought the white paper out and not even a single line in that report stated that we can’t play in the evening,” Mr Fianoo explained in an interview with Akoma FM.
“But we were waiting for tempers to calm and see to it that there must be a starting point to tightening up security and also educate the fans that football isn’t about fight.
“So, we have considered all these things, and we believe that bringing back the love demands that we put certain things behind us and move forward.”
Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko are set for another showdown after an epic clash last week, but this time will do it in honour of the President of the Republic.
The game has been slated for 4th March 2022 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
In attendance will be President Nana Akufo-Addo to perform the ceremonial kick-off and decorate the players with medals.
Kotoko were crowned champions the last time both sides met in the President’s Cup in 2019 after a comeback effort by the Porcupine Warriors at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Also, Kotoko have won the trophy on six occasions, two more than Hearts of Oak.
