A 45-year-old Ghana Education Service (GES) Accountant has been hauled before the court for allegedly swindling 169 health workers.
The accused, Gabriel Akosah Bobie, is said to have solicited GH¢563, 500, from the health workers with a promise to secure financial clearance and biometric registration.
He has been slapped with 33 counts of defrauding by false pretense at the Accra Circuit Court. He has pleaded not guilty to the said charges.
Counsel for the accused urged the court to grant the accused bail, adding that he would fully cooperate with the police and make himself available before the court.
The prosecution opposed the bail application, urging the court to remand him in police custody for the duration of the investigation
DSP Evans Kesse argued that remanding Bobie would enable thorough investigations to take place.
After listening to the parties, the court presided by Susanna Eduful granted Bobie bail in the amount of GH¢600,000, with three sureties who would justify their ownership of properties through title deeds.
The complainants, who are health support workers at Ahmadiyya Health Service, alleged that Bobie engaged agents between 2019 and 2022 to promote his services.
Money was transferred to Bobie’s agents through mobile money accounts (numbers 0542036310, 0591838707) and a Ghana Commercial Bank account (4131010023221).
Despite the funds collected, the accused allegedly failed to fulfill his commitments, leading to his subsequent arrest.
Bobie was apprehended on July 19, 2023, in a separate case in Accra.
On July 21, 2023, the complainants reported Bobie’s actions to the Accra Regional Criminal Investigations Department after learning of his arrest.
Subsequent investigations by the police revealed that Bobie had received money from other individuals under similar false pretenses.
The case has been adjourned to September 4, 2023.
