The Ghana Education Service (GES) has condemned the alleged theft of food supplies meant for students at Awaso STEM Senior High School in the Western North Region, describing the incident as troubling and unacceptable.

The case has sparked concern among parents and education stakeholders who say student welfare must always remain a priority.

In a press statement issued on December 26 and signed by Head of Public Relations Daniel Fenyi, GES confirmed the arrest of the school’s matron, Benedicta Nyamadi, and a cook, Rachel Kyeremeng.

The two are alleged to have diverted food items intended for students, raising questions about internal supervision and accountability at the school.

According to the Service, the matter is currently being investigated by the Ghana Police Service.

GES says it is fully cooperating with the investigations to ensure that due process is followed and the truth is established.

Officials insist that the outcome of the probe will guide any further administrative action.

The incident has unsettled many parents who rely on the school feeding system to support their children’s daily needs.

GES has therefore sought to reassure the public that measures exist to prevent such situations and to protect students from neglect or abuse of trust.

In its statement, the Service made it clear that misconduct by staff will not be overlooked, noting that the alleged actions, if proven, go against the ethical and professional standards expected of education workers.

GES also reminded school staff across the country that public resources must be managed with honesty and responsibility.

“The Management of the Ghana Education Service does not condone any form of misconduct that compromises the welfare, nutrition, and well-being of students under its care,” the statement said.
