Germany Talks To Africa’s Autocrats

Germany has deployed its Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Svenja Schulze to engage with African nations under autocratic rule, and the thrust of these engagements is to bear on the governments to create conducive atmospheres in those territories where freedoms are the risk of curtailment.

Europe’s economic powerhouse, Germany, bears the brunt of migrations from Africa’s Sahel region arising out of economic hardships and the absence of guaranteed freedoms.

Germany has been championing the crusade against such geographical movements, which more often than not, consumes some voyagers on the Mediterranean, with the bulk of the survivors aiming for a stay in Germany.

Madam Svenja Schulze was in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso to confer with the military government led by Captain Ibrahim Traore to secure deals to engender development and respect for human rights in the West African nation.

Another sticking point discussed was the Jihadist invasion often with a bloody trail in Burkina Faso. The consequential security phenomenon is a danger to the peace and security of citizens blamed for worsening conditions within the scope of migration.

The German minister would move to Niger, and Mali too. Morocco has launched the African Atlantic Initiative to grant access to the Atlantic coast to the Sahel nations all of which are landlocked. Until the Schulze diplomatic overture in the Sahel to bring the benefactor nation to a direct interface with target areas, Germany previously routed assistance through the European Union Project.

The other aspect of the Sahel situation is the undeniable presence of the Russian Federation in close contact with military rulers in the aforementioned countries. Could Russia be a moderating factor in the scheme of things? Niger’s economy has picked up since the ouster of the civilian government but early yet to heave sighs of relief regarding its impact on migration.

Even as Germany goes on this noble tangent, the fact remains that even countries under constitutional rule on the African continent are stuck in quagmires that have triggered migration flows. It represents losses in critically needed manpower to advanced countries such as Germany, sometimes as unplanned receivals.
