Germany beat Spain to win women’s football bronze

Germany beat world champions Spain to win bronze in the Olympic women’s football at Paris 2024.

Giulia Gwinn scored the only goal, converting from the penalty spot on 65 minutes after she was clumsily fouled by Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll.

There was late drama as Spain were handed a lifeline with a penalty seven seconds from time, but Alexia Putellas was denied by a fine save by goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.

Spain had the best chance of a quiet first half, with Aitana Bonmati hitting the woodwork minutes before the break.

Victory in Lyon means Germany have won the bronze medal for a fourth time, after doing so in 2000, 2004 and 2008.

World Cup and Nations League winners Spain, who were playing in the Olympics for the first time, dominated possession in the latter stages and had a flurry of chances, but could not find the goal to force extra time.

Brazil face the United States in the gold medal match at Parc des Princes on Saturday (16:00 BST).
