Gas Supply Resumes: GRIDCo and ECG restore power to affected areas

The Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced the restoration of gas supply from the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCO) to thermal power plants in Tema.

This development brings relief to affected customers as all previously shutdown power plants have resumed operations, ensuring the return of electricity supply.

In a joint press statement released on Friday, December 13, 2024, the two organizations assured stakeholders of their commitment to delivering reliable electricity supply to Ghanaians.

“With the return to normalcy, GRIDCo and ECG wish to assure that we will continue our collaborative efforts to ensure continued reliable supply,” the statement noted.

GRIDCo and ECG also expressed gratitude to customers and stakeholders for their patience during the disruptions caused by the gas supply challenges. “We thank our stakeholders and customers for their patience and understanding,” they added.

Background

The restoration follows a temporary disruption in gas supply, which had affected operations at some thermal power plants in Tema. This had led to power outages in parts of the country, impacting businesses and households.

With the resumed supply of gas from WAPCO, GRIDCo and ECG have successfully restored operations at all affected power plants, bringing much-needed stability to the national power grid.

Assurances for reliable power

As Ghana’s energy sector continues to grapple with challenges, the statement emphasized GRIDCo and ECG’s commitment to working collaboratively to maintain reliable electricity supply for customers.

The announcement is expected to ease public concerns over power reliability, especially during the holiday season.
