Galamsey fight: Ban small-scale mining now – GMA, other unions to Akufo-Addo
The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to immediately ban all small-scale mining operations, both legal and illegal.
Together with several health unions and associations, the GMA, in a joint statement highlighted the urgent need for action to prevent a looming environmental catastrophe.
The health sector groups expressed deep concern over the destruction of Ghana’s forest reserves and water bodies caused by mining activities.
They emphasized that this environmental harm poses serious threats to public health and the nation’s future.
“We are on the brink of an environmental catastrophe that will severely impact the health, well-being, and future of our citizens,” the statement read. The unions and associations called for immediate action, urging the president to direct a total ban on small-scale mining operations without delay.
They also called on the government to enhance regulatory enforcement by equipping security agencies to enforce the ban and prosecute violators swiftly.
Additionally, they urged all political parties to publicly commit to combating illegal and unethical mining practices in Ghana.
The health sector groups’ demand for action reflects growing concerns about the environmental and health impacts of mining and underscores the need for a coordinated response to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources and public health.
The other associations include the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), the Government and Hospital Pharmacists Association (GHOSPA), and the Health Services Workers Union of Ghana (TUC)
The statement was also supported by the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU), Mortuary Workers’ Association of Ghana (MOWAG), Ghana Association of Certified Registered Anesthetists (GACRA), Health Accounting Staff Association (HASAG), and Ghana Physician Assistants Association (GPAA).
